Who knows who among todays authors will be considered classic 50 years from now. Jonathan Lethem? Mark Leyner? Wendy Grimsley or Amanda Walczesky? Only kidding a little. I mean, I am teaching high school English for the first time this year (three days away--crap), and I was cringing when I saw most of the obvious options for literature like Poe and Dickinson. It's almost like the glorified CANON, as delineated by Harold Bloom and other critics, has to be old, and they refuse to take risks on work by a living writer. Later on, when it's safe, they'll agree how great is-- but long after the fact. Okay, exaggeration, probably, but some truth, yes?

Kerouac and Ginsberg and company are classics now, but I think the critics of the day ripped on them (at least Truman Capote).

As Faulkner said, read everything...

that's all great Josh, until you get to the end, and wham-o! everyone has to quote someone that is believable, don't they? i'm going to quote you next time . . .

As Baker said, "as Faulkner said, read everything . . . "

thanks, for the name drop, though ;)

I haven't rocked enough boats to be considered classic 50 years from now, maybe 51

I posted my question on your homepage...you can ignore it and answer it here (actually I shall go delete it). What I can't figure out is when I post my poetry my spaces between stanzas seem to disappear. What on earth am I doing wrong?

for some reason it seems to like it pasted into notepad and then copied from there into the editor. a pain i know. it supports html though so shouldn't be too hard to format if the first suggestion doesn't work. i'll do some research.

Boring Q, but I like to know where I'm at:

Is it better to answer people's comments re: writing in the review boxes, or in the comments box on their page?
Whatever people prefer, let me know. It's just I might not go back to someone's piece for a while, so if there's a debate or question, I won't know about it for ages unless I know to check back.

Thanks.

I think it is better to comment in the review boxes (on the same page as the work). I would think regular chatter, banter, and thanks are more the home page comment boxes kind of material.

Hi Paul

I tried to post a poem but when I preview it the breaks between stanzas don't appear and it becomes one long lump of a thing! What am I doing wrong?

I don't have notepad, but I have found that if I copy from Word into Excel before I paste into the new writing box here that the stanza breaks stay.
