Maybe it is because I travel so seldom and that those far-off places have marked me so indelibly, but I have this far-flung kinship with the few friends of mine who have heard St. Mary's trumpet cry the hour over the market square, and the pigeons! and the even smaller handful of my friends who have stood at the foot of St. Basil's Cathedral in Red Square, marvelling 'even here...'

which was one of the first poems that really impressed me when I joined the Cafe
