About C. Boylan

C. Boylan
Bio
I've considered myself a writer (prematurely, I admit) since the age of five; it's all I've ever wanted to do. I'm working hard to improve my skills and ability.

This bio, for instance, needs a lot of work.
Genres
Poetry and Prose, mainly poetry (I'm no good at labelling stuff, sorry).
Publishing Credits
New book available from Lulu.com
http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/where-nothing-is-sacred-volume-i/1637740]

Poem published in Tangent Literary Arts magazine, 2008

Poem published in Raw Edge magazine, November 2007

20 poems published in different United Press Ltd anthologies since 2003
Awards
Won the United Press 'Inspirations' poetry contest in May 2008 with 'Why'.
Influences
Pretty much anyone I've ever read - even the crap, because you can learn a lot from the mistakes of others.
Favourite Books
I've got loads. Hmm.
Okay, a few heroes...

Phillip Larkin. Sylvia Plath. Ted Hughes (yes, both of them!). Seamus Heaney. John Keats. Carol Ann Duffy. Allen Ginsberg. Oscar Wilde. Stephen King. John Steinbeck. Christopher Brookmyre. Nick Hornby. Terry Pratchett. Lionel Shriver. George Orwell. Albert Camus. James Joyce. F. Scott Fitzgerald. Voltaire.
Writer, Prizefighter, Or Caffeine Inspired All Nighter?
The question is better than any answer I could give.

Untitled

The boy had never felt so alone. At the field’s edge, fixated on the motorway running alongside, its steady swish of headlights, he wondered whether the people stowed inside each car were in a big hurry to get somewhere or if it just seemed that way. Sometimes the sky felt so high it was beyond reach but now its black mass was oppressively close, overwhelming and almost suffocating. He splayed his hand out an inch from his face and could barely distinguish it from the night. This made him lau…

Optimism: A[t]tempt[ing] Project

Everything is killing me.

You rendered me so fragile –
a child toddling past
the park bench where I sit
to contemplate the future
looks up at me and gurgles,
and I

break down. Of course.

He leaves to go get ice cream
or chase a ball
or whatever kids do,
[am I confusing them
with puppies again –
which one fetches sticks?]
blissfully unaware
that the mere sight of him
stabs me in the chest
repeatedly.
Such violen…

Pinocchio Couldn't Help It

sweeping, take a moment to energise yourself on the craziest broom-stick rodeo never seen

and practise laughing aloud, without a trace of self-consciousness – if children, lunatics

and evil masterminds can manage it, so can we –

now wait for someone to pass by the window and burst into song, at the sort of volume

reserved solely for midday shower solos when you’re certain nobody’s home

- did you startle them?

good.

what,…

"Life's a..."

and then you die

'cause that mean doggie

done turned tail

and bit you

right in the buttocks

gnawing her way

through to your heart

and spat it out at your feet

good girl

you said

'cause honesty is of utmost importance

and she's harmless really

didn't mean nothing by it

except to remind you

of how less than nothing you are

like we could pick up zero…

CAVE ART MA[R]T[Y]R.ial

Tomorrow
or tomorrow
or tomorrow...

a generation identifies more with Augustine’s
less saintly phase than with J.C’s supposed self-sacrifice;
fair enough, for if we all chose to perish in martyr’s
protest at mankind’s lack of merit, we’d be abandoning this planet
to the hedonist and criminal, who don’t give a shit.

Stalling what disheartens, when faced with fire-breathing facts,
allows us a sense of endless chances to change.

I think I was trying to set up little verbal echoes in the poem. There's an echo of the one word in the other that you hear when you say 'he karaokes' out loud. It's probably less obvious on the page or screen so I know what you mean.

yeah, shine street is turning into one of those complex things which twists and turns around on itself. the other idea is sketchy but getting more solid, and the way i'm thinking of it should have a lot of scope for pretty much doing whatever the well we want

i am still trying to formulate how this collaborative project is going to work and i am thinking it may trun out not to be the shine street one just because of how locked in in my head that one is becoming - but i have another idea which i think is more flexible and might work as a poetry and prose vehicle. when it gets more tangible for me i'll let you know, but it is definitely in my head at the moment. also doing nanowrimo at the moment amongst other things so my head is packed :D

Thank you very much for the review. And although I don't have particularly fun work posted, I hope to. Perhaps my skill will congeal a bit too. Less subversive. More Tasty. Thanks again.
