'cross the Lake from New Orleans, United States
Bio
Or you can call me jimmy. Also, j. m. scoville is generally my publishing handle.

I originally come from the Oregon Coast, passed through the post-punk scene of the late '80s in the Pacific Northwest ( that eventually was named "grunge") as a performance artist, before moving to New Orleans in '92. There I took up playwrighting, becoming part of the local scene with some 1-Acts produced, while expanding my poetry. After that, we hopped over the Big Pond to see the U.K. & Ireland during our honeymoon, lived in San Diego for over a year, before venturing across the channel to go as far as Buda Pest - deeply being touched by Praha & Amsterdam. Now, we're back in the South, living across the Lake from New Orleans.

Yes, we were stained by the hurricanes of Katrina & Rita. After over 2 years, our lives FINALLY seem to be getting back to some semblance of normal. If "normal" is actually a possibility now with all that has happen to us...

"We" as in my girl of over 16 years & our 3 wonder pups that have been present in our lives for over a decade.

I have been writing almost as far back as my memory stretches, only being bettered by memories of learning how to draw, given by my folks at our kitchen table, way back in the mid '60s. In my so-called adulthood, I've had some success with poetry (both in print & in performance), then playwrighting, & finally prose. Prose found a foothold after I started having migraine induced seizures, utterly changing my mind & my perceptions. My 2 best short stories can be found on storySouth.com

In all of this, we have kept active by hosting Open Mikes in Coffeehouses as well as discovering experimental filmmaking. With the taste of cinema, I've directed (& wrote) a few short celluloid pieces & began a large digital film, acted with my wife in friends' works, as well as organizing & hosting a local Indie Film screening. That has enabled me to work for the New Orleans Film Fest as a judge. Then there's all the shooting/recording I have done for local burlesque groups in the French Quarter, plus a few plays & musicals, giving me a handle to learn my new digital camera thoroughly. Unfortunately, the seizures have come again to staple my existence into tiny little moments without much consistency. Those have forced me to put everything in this paragraph in a closet to be accessed later, when I am of better health.
Genres
I come to the circus as a writer, disregarding genre or my mismatched socks.

Writer, Prizefighter, Or Caffeine Inspired All Nighter?
Hmmm... I'm a Gemini, so I go both the way of “Writer” & “Caffeine Inspired All-Nighter,” depending on my mood & health constrictions; not really taping on my boxing gloves these days because the moon has been swallowed by the likes of a yellow bombed buzzard...

What Is Your Working Practice?

Added a post May 13

Often what sparks my writing is reading something by another writer. Sometimes i only get into a paragraph or 2 of their story/poem & it sends me off. Often i never go back to finish their work... Read More »

Chimmy chimmy coco puffs's Friends

Chimmy chimmy coco puffs's Writing

To all the Slips at See...

Sorry to all the ships at sea...

Sorry that i've not been a very good friend to anyone on my list.

Y'see (or is it Sea?), i don't spend much time reading on the net due to a daily battle with mind storms or what the public calls migraines. I'm in a quagmire of sorts, stumbling down the lane, unable to rid myself of such a mucky reality. Sure i'm on meds, but they don't do much except strip my biology of its immune system. The catch there IS 'i have to be on said meds or not get…

The Writer's Situation

Originally this ran as a series of questions to specific writers in 3 issues of New American Review (9-11) published in paperback form running through the years 1970 to 1971. In the final question "new millennium" replaces the original "sixties".

1.Why do you continue to write? What purpose does your work serve? Do you feel yourself part of a rear-guard action in the service of a declining tradition? Has your sense of vocation altered significant…

"Submission"...

"Submission"...

i just realized how pathetic that term is for us struggling writers, who must surrender our dignity, our wills, & our hopes in an ugly form of getting recognized when we submit our art to the concealed Submission Departments...

Submission...

An evil sound to an evil process.

We know who you are, why do you make us into beggars with bowls? Make our humanity loose & holy like second-hand clothes given out at the…

Gustav B. Gone: WE'RE SAFE & @ HOME!

We are safe & finally home.

No trees on our or my In-law's homes. Some 15 trees seem to have blocked the Evacuation route/Highway 25 from our abode to my In-laws, then another 5 at least blocked our little country road off

And in this Corner, We have Hurricane Gustav...

As it stands right now, we're in the path of Gustav when it makes landfall on Tuesday at 2 AM around New Orleans. We live north of The City, across the lake, in some quiet Wild Woods. It looks like we'll evacuate tomorrow night to Jackson, Mississippi, to the family's hurricane retreat. Mandatory evacuation for St. Bernard Parish is set for Saturday morn…

Hey there. We're all good. Halloween I've got Fire Department duty. Denise will host a little shindig at our house. Movies? Yeah, I want to see W. when I find time. As for Vera Drake, I heard of it but didn't see it. Mike Leigh usually does good stuff. He's got another one coming too--forget the name.

I will hopefuly be posting a story soon. It needs work, but I'm excited about it. A unique fictional style for me.

Soon soon. Take it easy. Say hi to everyone. Stay dry and warm.

they are all safe. no power, but safe. they were on a curfew after it hit, but that was half a day and then they ventured back to my bro's house to find it intact. their boss let them hang out at the office because it has a generator. no new updates as of yesterday. thanks for the kind words. i was freaking out because i missed their calls and couldn't reach them, but he called as soon as he got a signal.
