you know perfectly well what they think
your accent somehow rises you above
and your intellect and your degrees
put you on the upper crust

and they think that your words are all fiction
like some sort of book report and not real tragedy
until they meet me

then they wonder how you could lower yourself
from such a proper and eloquent species
to the gutter that i lay in

the same places you played in England
where you were the mirror image of me
except more grungy and unwanted

oh these robes that we wear for our
trip to the pedestal, how they fall
and leave you naked and wonderous
when the money runs out

it's a costume that you wear to impress a suit
but neither of you are blood and flesh
until some tramp like me takes that shit off
