this morning i was reading "Scenes from Politian"
and you were playing "The Killing Moon"

seconds later i was rummaging through your trousers
like a frustrated diabetic through a candy dish

shortly i slipped the golden ribbon between the white sheets
and you pulled the sheets up and undid your belt

soon you were clenching your thighs, whispering "yes, yes"
throwing your head back and coming in my fist

later the room was filled with jazz and arguments
and accusations and frustrations that
sometimes a Cherry Coke will fix

out of the weathered persistence to resist
sometimes we just want clean water to drink
or a hand job or a voice to silence

and sometimes things break or fall to pieces or into place
like puzzling a life together out of scrap paper

sometimes we mistake prophets for salesmen
but we buy the book and hope for enlightenment anyway

but mostly we are simple graphite sketches
and life is an intricate collage where the trained eye
can overlook what should be standing out
